A Bunch of Hocus Pocus

I always loved Halloween as a kid, so I have a new found love for the day now that I have a kid of my own. I always start decorating for Halloween on October 1st, because why not? By decorating, I mean festooning my daughter’s room.

This year’s decor included a spooky embroidered hoop, vinyl bats cut with my Cricut machine, and handmade bunting. The hoop is a pattern by Florals and Floss Embroidery, available here. Most of the embroidery patterns I use are from her – absolutely love them. 

Continuing with the fall theme, I went a little bit pumpkin crazy when Stitch Sister Co. released her Granny Pumpkin pattern. I was so hooked (pun intended) and quickly whipped up three. I had to stop there because I don’t have endless room to store these cuties, but I could have made 100. 

This was a great stash buster with endless colour combo potential. I made the first in worsted-weight acrylic and the second two in cotton. I much preferred the squishy wool-like texture of acrylic and will definitely make a wool version. 

And last, but certainly not least, what’s Halloween without a costume? While I still have full control over my almost-three-year-old daughter’s costume, I decided to go with Minnie Mouse this year. Honestly, she probably would have picked it anyways! I bought the ears first and tried to fabric match online. That was a big mistake as the fabric was WAY too light. And so I give you an unexpected detour from my original plans: the princess dress.

I had some light pink floral tulle in my stash, so I thought it would add a perfect princess-ey layer to an otherwise plain dress. I used The Daisy Dress by Oh Me Oh My Patterns and shortened the underskirt a bit. The result is a swishy, super cute dress that my daughter absolutely loves. Now on to the original plan:

I brought the Minnie ears to a local fabric store to colour match (like I should have in the beginning) and found a spot-on pink cotton broadcloth. I used the same pattern, but added white cotton polka dot appliques to the skirt. I finished the costume with a black ribbon to give it that perfect Minnie look.

Making my daughter’s Halloween costumes has become a favourite tradition that I’ll continue as long as she lets me. Whatever your fall traditions are, I  hope you found some inspiration for future projects. Until next time…
