The Year of the Sock

1–2 minutes

The theme of this year’s holiday making was definitely socks. That’s not really a surprise since I enjoy knitting socks all year round. They’re the perfect commuting project and super useful. I stand by my belief that handknit socks are superior to any other sock (in the winter, at least).

For my first pair, I used a tried and true pattern: The Everyday Socks by Petite Knit. I absolutely love the short row heel in this pattern – I really haven’t knit another type of heel since. It was my first time knitting with West Yorkshire Spinners’ sock yarn (pictured in the Hollyberry colourway), but it won’t be my last. The self-striping/pattern combo is so fun and knit up quickly.

My next two pairs were gifts, and also a bit of uncharted sock-knitting territory.

For all the sock knitting I’ve done in the past few years, I had never knit a pair in DK. I’m not sure why I chose gifted socks for this new venture, but they actually worked out really well (and worked up quickly). Since these were gifts for coworkers with smaller feet than me, I used the Thickmas Socks pattern by Summer Lee for overall fit guidance. I did substitute the heel flap and gusset for my favourite short row heel. I’m definitely going to use the scrap yarn to knit up a pair for myself in the new year.

Last, but certainly not least, I squeezed in one last pair of Everyday Socks before the year was up. I used Cats & Dogs by Opal in colourway 11230. I think this is my favourite pair to date. It’s festive, but not too “Christmassy” to wear all winter long.

Writing this post might be an odd thing to do at 10:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, but I can definitely think of a whole bunch of things I’d rather not do. Nights like New Years are way too much pressure! Here’s to doing what makes us happy in 2024.

Happy making,

Jackie
