I’m a little bit late to the party, but I couldn’t let June go on without talking about what I made in May. Last month was full of garments for myself – far more than I usually make. I had a lot of fun experimenting with new patterns, as well as some tried and true pieces that I knew would turn out.

Pattern: Adrienne Blouse
Designer: Friday Pattern Co.
Made: May 8-9
The Adrienne Blouse is one of my absolute favourite patterns. It’s actually become my go-to t-shirt pattern, even though the original pattern isn’t a t-shirt at all. To achieve this, I created a shortened sleeve piece and didn’t add elastic to the hem. This left me with a flutter sleeve that is feminine and breezy. For this version I used a Family Fabrics Netherlands cotton jersey from Riverside Fabrics. Even though this fabric was high-quality and beautiful, I actually prefer this style of shirt in a drapey bamboo cotton.

Pattern: Sandcastle Bucket Hat
Designer: Waves & Wild
Made: May 9 + May 27-28
Next up we have my favourite project of the month. I’ll start off by revealing that I’m not a hat person. My head circumference is quite large at 23”, so off-the-rack women’s hats don’t fit (neither do men’s hats, for that matter), but I knew I couldn’t go another summer without protecting my head from the sun. I can’t even tell you how excited I was when this pattern worked out. I made the largest size in leftover bull denim from a previous project (originally purchased at Blackbird Fabrics). The brim is much wider than I expected, giving it more of a boho look than a bucket hat.

I loved sewing this hat so much that I made a reversible version for my 2-year-old. I used cotton canvas purchased a few years ago from Dailylike Canada. This is a free pattern that ranges in size from baby to adult.

Pattern: Gilbert Top
Designer: Helen’s Closet
Made: May 17
If you’d like to read the details of this shirt, check out my blog post here. I’ll quickly say that this one turned out a bit more cropped than I had planned. I think I’ll still wear it this summer, but it will take some figuring out!

Pattern: Evelyn Skirt
Designer: Chalk & Notch
Made: May 29
Sneaking in at the very end of May, we have the Evelyn Skirt. This was my second time making this pattern. The first time was a bit of a disaster, partly because of my poor fabric choice and partly because of the slit facing. I’m not a huge fan of facings to begin with, so I thought I would omit it from this version to see what happened. I ended up constructing the slit much like the Friday Pattern Company Saltwater Slip Dress and it worked out much better!
As always, thank you if you made it to the end of this post. I hope you found some inspiration in these projects.
Happy making,
Jackie
