A few months ago, I was all in on crocheting toys. When I say I literally couldn’t stop, I mean it. It was all I wanted to do crafting-wise, and (if I’m being totally honest) I still have the crocheting bug! I want nothing more than to make adorable toys all day long, but it’s not practical nor sustainable. In the meantime, I love seeing my daughter enjoy the toys that I’ve made.
This all started when I discovered Animal Friends of Pica Pau by Yan Schenkel. I took the book out from the library and bought it before my loan was up. I also bought Animal Friends of Pica Pau 2 while I was at it. I really couldn’t get enough. At the risk of sounding like a complete addict, I bought the third book on pre-order and had it shipped from Germany to my home in Canada.
Before I found these books, I actually didn’t really like crochet toys. I found them a bit rough and not as polished as sewn toys. Obviously I didn’t know the possibilities! Here’s a little look at some of the patterns I’ve tried:

This big pink gal is Louisa Elephant from Animal Friends of Pica Pau 2. At least, a version of Louisa Elephant. I made quite a few adjustments to accommodate the supplies I had on hand, but she has to be one of my favourites! I like how her outfit looks like a vintage swimming costume.

This is Murray Sea Otter from the first Animal Friends of Pica Pau. Again, I made some changes to use up the materials that I had on hand. The highlight of this one is the little vest. I truly can’t get over it.

Next up we have Logan Koala from Animal Friends of Pica Pau 2. I stuck pretty closely to the pattern on this one, but I did give him pink pants – because why not?

This one is my personal favourite because she’s a bit ridiculous (in the best possible way): Greta Hen from Animal Friends of Pica Pau 3. The shawl gets me every time. I will say that this toy is quite large, and that’s due to the yarn I used. When I make toys in the future, I’ll definitely use sport weight instead of worsted.

Finally, this Satsuki Cats from Animal Friends of Pica Pau 2 is my daughter’s favourite. She liked it so much that I had to make her another.

I know this reads as a big endorsement for Animal Friends of Pica Pau, and I suppose it is. I really don’t have to look too far when I need an absolutely adorable crochet toy pattern. Writing this post has officially given me the urge to make another toy. Easter is a good excuse, right?
Happy making,
Jackie
