Heirloom Toys

2–3 minutes

Heirloom Toys weren’t always at the top of my sewing list, but then I had a child – a reasonable excuse for so many cute makes. After trying a pattern or two, I never felt the final product to be truly “heirloom.” I definitely had no desire to keep them, and truthfully they ended up in my Closet Core pouf. Until Studio Seren patterns appeared in my Instagram feed…

I had been eyeing Studio Seren patterns for a while, but it was her Halloween cat that really pushed me to give one a go.

This cat isn’t perfect by any means, but I still really liked how it turned out. I also learned a few tips that work for me when putting these toys together. I’ll share them with you as well, even though they go against the pattern instructions: I really struggled to get the face just right, which was a bit of a hangup (I didn’t choose the perfectionist life, but here we are). For my next projects, I decided to sew the head in two separate pieces as instructed, but I actually embroidered the face before construction. I’m sure there are drawbacks to doing it this way, but I was much happier with the results.

This adorable duo were Christmas presents for my daughter and have seen a lot of chaos since then (just two-year-old things). I’m happy to report that they’re still going strong despite their owner. Speaking of Christmas, I did give the Studio Seren deer pattern a whirl as well (I might have been addicted at this point).

Umm… That vest?! Are you kidding me? Almost too cute. These deer are sporting Rifle Paper Co. quilting cotton from Stacked Fabric Co. – where I get most of my patterned cottons. All in all, I definitely recommend Studio Seren’s patterns. They are well-written and great scrap busters!

I don’t know if these will actually become heirlooms, but I love seeing my daughter’s excitement when I give her something handmade. Sweaters don’t quite get the same reaction!

Happy making,

Jackie
